DI’s principals and program staff members have been thought leaders in the democracy and governance field. They have written books, book chapters, and articles and have testified before Congressional committees. Eric Bjornlund is the author, for example, of Beyond Free and Fair: Monitoring Elections and Building Democracy (Washington, DC, Baltimore and London: Woodrow Wilson Center Press and Johns Hopkins University Press, 2004). Glenn Cowan is a co-author of The Quick Count and Election Observation (Washington, DC: National Democratic Institute, 2002), a manual on vote count verification for civic organizations and political parties. In addition, DI often prepares reports, statements, and other documents as part of analytical, election monitoring, and other projects.
